Blow Drying Transitioning or Natural Hair

By Olivia X. Pierce

Similar to using a flat iron, blowing out natural or transitioning hair is a style you might choose to take on sometimes to have a particular look or to switch up your look.

Overall, its best to stop using heat products on your hair entirely. However, if you utilize the right products and technique, you will be okay with infrequent blow drying without incurring too much damage.

Occasionally it is nice to blow dry your hair prior to you do a twist or braid out style.

If you do a blow out prior to doing a braid or twist out you have to change the products that you use to make sure that you don't re-hydrate your hair excessively and cause it to "go back" after the blow dry.

Finding the Most Effective Blow Dryer: For transitioning or natural hair it is important that you blow dry with a blow dryer that uses a comb attachment. Using an attachment comb allows you to style thicker hair more easily than if you did not have one. It helps so that you do not need to use the blow dryer in one hand and a comb in the other hand. Knowing this, you can eliminate any blow dryer that does not come with or accommodate a comb attachment when you are making your selection in purchasing.

Once you eliminate any dryers that do not include an attachment comb there are not that many choices left. Basic brands are Con Air, Yellow Bird Hot Tools, and Tourmaline Tools. The best is a ceramic ionic one.

Products: During the blow drying process, you should only use heat protectant. This is because if you use conditioner or moisturizer, it will take your hair longer to try. Conditioners and moisturizers add moisture to your hair, this will only be additional moisture that you are trying to get back out as you are blow drying. After your hair is dry, however, put in gloss or shine serum, an oil based moisturizer, and hair oil.

The Method: For the fastest drying and to lessen breaking, its best to section your hair out into 12 sections and then dry from tip to root applying heat through each section of hair until it is dry.

If you work from root to tip you will no doubt pull your hair out because it causes too much tension on the hair. Also, don't put on any products, especially any sealants or oils, until after you are done drying each section. If you put the oil on before the section is dry, it takes much longer to dry because the strands are already coated with the moisture "sealed in".
