The Lowdown On Switching To Natural Skin Care

By Murial Signore

If your looks are important to you, it's very likely that you use a variety of hygiene and beauty products. Unfortunately these products aren't always good for you. They may in fact carry some serious health risks, not to mention the impact they have on the environment. For this reason, more and more consumers are switching to natural skin care.

Most mainstream cosmetics today contain a variety of chemicals. These include petroleum-derived ingredients like mineral oil and preservatives like parabens. To improve the appearance of the products and add the wonderful smell, manufacturers also add artificial colorants and fragrances.

Research has shown that many artificial ingredients found in cosmetics carry possible health risks. Parabens are particularly controversial, since they may be linked to breast cancer and problems with hormones. Many of the commonly used artificial ingredients may also worsen dermatological issues, causing rashes, acne and wrinkles.

Chemicals may also have terrible effects on the environment. Since mineral oil is derived from petroleum, it's from a non-renewable resource: oil. The oil industry's negative impact on the environment is well known, but you only need to look at photographs of marine life after an oil spill to realize how serious the risks really are. Mineral oil and other artificial chemicals are usually non-biodegradable too, leaving residues in the soil and water systems that, over time, cause pollution.

If you decide to switch to products that contain only naturally derived ingredients, it's always best to be aware that even these ingredients aren't completely risk free. It's also very easy for manufacturers to jump on the green bandwagon without actually being more environmentally responsible. As with anything else you use on your body, you should read the labels carefully, stay informed about what the ingredients do and test the products for allergic reactions.

One way to ensure that you know exactly what goes onto your epidermis and hair is to make your own products at home. With things you find in your kitchen you can make anything from scrubs to moisturizers. Even making cleansing products is not that difficult. Look online for recipes. You'll be amazed at how efficient many of these home-made remedies are, not to mention how much cheaper.

Many manufacturers of natural skin care actually started out as home industries, using simple recipes. You can find their products at many outlets, especially in health stores or online. Some even have their own stores where you'll find incredible variety in ways to take care of your looks, your health and the environment.
