Learn How To Properly Care For Your Teeth

By Tracy Yontz

Visiting the dentist has long been something that many people dread. However, this does not need to be the case for anyone who has taken the time to conduct a bit of research. Use the tips and advice that follow, and you can be among those for whom getting proper dental care is a simple, routine matter of course.

Make tooth brushing fun for your young children so that they will want to engage in the habit. Play games with your child like seeing who can take longest to brush their teeth. Give children stickers or stars for completing routines that include tooth brushing, and buy them a small present when they have brushed their teeth for a certain number of days in a row.

If going to the dentist makes you anxious, there's several things you can do to get the dental care you need. Some dentists recommend taking anti-anxiety medication before visits and are willing to prescribe it to you for this purpose. You also want to choose a dentist who is patient with anxious patients and consider getting nitrous oxide treatments when you have dental work done.

Calcium plays a huge role in tooth strength, so make sure you're getting at least 500mg per day. If you're not eating a lot of dairies, nuts or calcium-rich vegetables, take a supplement instead. This is the best way to avoid enamel problems or cavities down the road, so take it seriously.

You need to visit the dentist twice a year for a check-up and cleaning to keep your mouth in tip-top shape. The cost is worth it when you consider how much you will be billed when you have to have a cavity filled, root canal or extraction! Don't forget the cost of dentures!

Never assume that skipping your dental appointment is okay. Everyone should start getting dental care as soon as they are six months old. Dental check-ups should be done every six months after. This holds true for children, teenagers, adults and the elderly. Everyone needs to see a dentist twice a year past their first birthday.

Select a quality toothbrush and replace it regularly. The ideal toothbrush should be soft on your gums. If you bleed when brushing your teeth, you need to find a softer toothbrush. Do not keep the same toothbrush for more than a month since bacteria can quickly develop on this object.

Floss your teeth with a quality floss at least once each day. Food gets stuck in between your teeth and no matter how well you brush your teeth you can not get it all out. Use floss to get into those hard to reach places to ensure that the food does not create cavities in your teeth.

Never forget the importance of mouthwash! Mouthwash is able to rinse out the areas of your mouth that are not able to be reached by a toothbrush. Choose to rinse twice a day- once in the morning and once at night. Make sure you are choosing a mouthwash that doesn't contain alcohol, as alcohol can dry out the mouth and lead to other problems.

Don't rush through brushing your teeth. Brushing may already be part of your regular routine, but many still rush through it. Don't be one of those people. Take your time when brushing your teeth. Don't just go through the motions. Make sure you are brushing thoroughly and for, at least, a full minute.

Take care of your teeth with these tips. You'll find that they are easy to use, and easy for you to remember to do. Your smile is a big part of who you are, so protect it. Just apply the information laid out here and you'll keep that smile forever.
